Meeting Mother Earth - Meeting yourself
The Art of Seeing: A Photographic Workshop in Mustang, Nepal
With Haris Kakarouhas
This workshop offers something beyond passive tourism: it transforms travel into a personal, creative encounter with the Other. Instead of being mere observers of a place and its culture, we are invited to engage meaningfully, to interact, and to create. Through the lens, our relationship with the landscape, the people, and their stories becomes deeper, more vivid, and more authentic.
In photography, there is a significant difference between "looking" and "seeing." The former is simply the perception of visual forms, while the latter is a deeper experience—an actual encounter with what stands before us. When we truly see, we recognize something that already exists within us. As Paul Klee once said, "Art does not reproduce the visible; rather, it makes visible what was previously unseen."
With this perspective, the workshop becomes a journey of self-discovery through photography. The focus is not just on what we photograph but on how we see the world. The act of capturing and viewing images becomes a means of expression and inner exploration. By cultivating our photographic sensitivity, we experiment and explore different aspects of ourselves.
This is not a typical teaching-based workshop but rather a personal experience. In a supportive and friendly environment, built on sharing, acceptance, and mutual respect, we will discover new ways to express ourselves through photography.
The workshop is aimed at those who wish to explore the Himalayan landscape and the cultural heritage of the mystical Mustang region in Nepal while also seeing photography as a medium of creative expression. No prior experience is required—only a willingness for personal exploration and active participation.
You can explore samples of previous workshop work and read participant testimonials here and here.

Flights to Kathmandu are not included in the package. Most flights from Greece arrive the following morning. If we arrive in Kathmandu on the same day the program starts, an additional overnight stay will be required.
Arrival in Kathmandu in the morning hours.
Start of the program. After arriving at the airport and collecting our luggage, we depart for a visit to Pashupatinath, the cremation site next to the Bagmati River, filled with shrines, temples and relatives of the dead who come all the way here for their cremation. In the afternoon, a flight to Pokhara, Nepal's second largest city.
Transfer to Hotel Lake View Resort 4* for overnight stay.
In the afternoon at the hotel there will be a photographic meeting of the group.
North of Pokhara lies the Annapurna mountain range with 3 of the 14 8,000 meter mountains of the world, Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and Manaslu. The Kali Gandaki river gorge between the first two mountains is the deepest gorge in the world.
Today's flight from Pokhara to Jomsom moves through this gorge and brings us to the mystical Mustang. Upon reaching Jomsom, we board 4X4 jeep type cars and immediately begin our trek to the village of Kagbeni. We will explore the village and the surrounding area, as well as the old "Red Monastery" said to have been built more than 500 years ago.
If we don't feel tired, then we can drive to visit the Muktinath shrine today which is located at an altitude of 3710 meters. This shrine is considered a symbol of religious harmony in Nepal, where historically both Buddhists and Hindus worship at the same place by mutually respecting each other.
In the afternoon we return to the village for an overnight stay.
Day drive 40 km, 1 ½ hour
Today, the jeep ride is quite fun as we navigate adventurous, bumpy and dusty stretches of road that traverse the brown and orange barren landscape, enriched with vibrant cultural landmarks such as chortens, or small monasteries and stunning views of the round peaks of Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, Through Peak and Yak Kawa.
We pass through several villages such as Chhuksang, Tangge and Samar village, pass by dramatic cliffs and cross the Yamadala Pass (3850 meters) to reach Ghiling village, where we will spend the night.
The images we encounter here include locals engaged in harvesting crops of wheat, mustard, potatoes, flour and yaks grazing on the farms makes for a truly magical day.
On the way, we will stop at several ancient caves and monasteries, such as Samar Gompa - carved out of brown rocks, and the famous Ramchung Cave, where Guru Rinpoche meditated in the 8th century.
Day drive, 45 km, 2 hours
Continuing towards Charang we will cross landscapes of great geological and photographic interest, which in some places look like a desert, in others have steep cliffs filled with caves.
Driving day 26 km, 1 hour
We start our day following the easy, but windy route that passes through unique landscapes with all shades of red, black and brown.
Along the route, we will cross the Lo La Pass, located at an altitude of 3965 meters. Moving a little further along the flow of the Kali Gandaki River, we can observe the gradual transition to the dry Tibetan plateau, where houses are made in the colour of the white clay that characterizes the capital of the Upper Mustang, Lo Manthang.
Once there, the environment changes to a vibrant valley of white brick houses decorated with prayer flags on the roofs. Make the most of a walk in this gem somewhere behind the shadow of the Himalayas. Enjoy an overnight stay here having an exhilarating experience. Tomorrow, an exciting excursion awaits us.
Day's driving: 20 km, 1 hour
Full day exploration of the heavenly walled city of Lo Manthang and the surrounding area. We will visit famous ancient monasteries including Namgyal Gompa, Thupchen Gompa and Garphu Gompa, where we can see many locals and visitors meditating.
Here, we can become observe images of the lifestyle of the Loba people, which is deeply connected to Tibetan Buddhism. Seeing a glimpse of the Loba wearing their traditional costume and jewelry truly resembles their deep spiritual connection to their roots. If possible, then you can visit their fields, small huts where each piece depicts an important story.
If you want, we will also explore several caves, such as Jhong Cave, which reflect a deep spirituality and peace. This whole day of exploration truly offers a profound insight into this valley.
We begin our return from Upper Mustang to the village of Marpha, where the "The Apple Garden" of Mustang is located. Of course it is worth here to try a fresh organic mill juice.
Along the way, we again pass by all the villages we encountered on the way up, having the opportunity to enjoy them from a different perspective. In the evening, we end up in the famous town of Jomsom, where we stay tonight, walking through the local markets buying souvenirs for our loved ones back home.
Day driving 114 km, 5 hours
In the morning, we will take a flight back to Pokhara and transfer to "Hotel Lake View Resort 4* for the overnight stay.
