Overview

Ararat is a mythical mountain on the eastern border of Turkey, where, according to tradition, Noah's Ark ran aground. It is a volcanic cone, but without a crater and recorded volcanic activity, which makes it difficult to explain geological its formation.

The first ascent to its peak in modern times took place in 1829 and since then it has often been a destination for many climbers and nature lovers. In 2016 the area was declared a military zone and climbs to the mountain were suspended and resumed in 2019, although it has not yet returned to the numbers of visitors of previous years.

The wider region is not particularly developed touristically, and some services (eg transport) lag behind other regions of Turkey.

The program was designed with an extra day of climbing to the top, in case of bad weather on the scheduled day. It will be combined with a tourist visit to the most important sights of Van and Dogubeyazit.

Activities / Schedule

Flight Athens – Van and driving in Dogubayazit

Meeting in the morning at Eleftherios Venizelos airport, at 08:00. Departure at 10:30 for Van in Eastern Turkey via Istanbul. Arrival at 17:25 and departure by car for Dogubeyazit, where we arrive after 3 hours (180 km). Arrange at Tehran Boutique Hotel or other similar and evening meal.

Dogubeyazit is a small town of 75,000 people, southwest of Ararat and just 35 km from the Iranian border. It has a long history since the Iron Age 2700 years ago, where the Urartu kingdom was located in the historic Armenian highlands around Lake Van.

Camp 1 (3.200 m)

Road transport to the slopes of Ararat, in the village of Cevirme, at an altitude of 2200 m, from where we start the ascent to the mountain from a smooth path at the beginning, which becomes steep at the end. After 4-5 hours of walking we camp at Camp 1 at an altitude of 3300 m. Accommodation in tents. Expected daytime temperature: 25-30o C. Route length:  7 km

Acclimatization ascent

Acclimatization ascent at an altitude of 4200 m and return to the same camp for overnight stay. Duration of course about 6 hours. Route length: 6,5+6,5 km

Camp 2 (4.200 m)

Ascent to Camp 2, at an altitude of 4200 m, after 4-5 hours of walking. The trail is steep and rocky and leads to an area with relatively limited camping facilities. In the afternoon we will rest for the climb to the top. Expected temperature: 20-25ο C. Route length: 6,5 km

Note: In the camping there are no organized toilets and everyone uses the surrounding rocks. So be careful because the area around the camp is relatively dirty.

Climb to the top (5,137 m) – Camp 1

Summit day. We wake up at midnight at 12:00 to have breakfast and then we start our ascent to the top, at about 1 after midnight. The trail is steep and rocky up to 4950 meters, where the glacier begins. Here we will wear the crampons to continue. The continuation of the ascent is smoother up to the first peak,  Inonu Peak. Then follow a ridge to the main peak, where we will reach after 5-7 hours of ascent. On the way back we will overtake Camp 2 and descend to Camp 1 at an altitude of 3200 m to stay overnight. Expected temperature depending on weather conditions from -20o C during the night climb, up to +25 during the day

Route length: 4+4 + 6.5 km, total duration 13-14 hours

Standby summit day

Immediately after breakfast we continue the descent of the mountain until 2200 where we will take the car to return to Dogubeyazit. Afternoon free.

Note: In case of bad weather on the previous summit day, then the climb to the top will take place today, limiting the program of the tourist visit to the last day

Dogubayazit

After breakfast we visit the palace of Ishak Pasha (UNESCO site) and then drive to Van where we settle at My Suit Hotel, or similar. In the afternoon we will visit Akhtamar Island and Van Castle

Geography - history

Ararat is located in eastern Turkey, just a few kilometers from the Iranian and Armenian borders. The ascents of Ararat officially began only in 1998, when the Turkish Mountaineering Federation issued a permit to climb to the summit, and in 2004 the area was declared a National Park and part of a protected habitat.

It is an important mountain in Armenian mythology, abode of the gods like Mount Olympus in Greek mythology. For the Armenians, it is a symbol of their national identity and adorns its coat of arms

Van (Greek: Eva) is the capital of the province of the same name in eastern Turkey. It is built on the shore of Lake Van, at an altitude of 1730 meters and has a population of about 370,000 inhabitants. It was the capital of the Urartu kingdom from the 9th century BC and was an important centre of Armenian culture until 1915. Today the majority of the inhabitants are of Kurdish origin.

Dogubayazit at an altitude of 1,625 m, is the capital of Dogubayazit province, the easternmost province of Turkey before the Iranian border. It has a population of about 115,000 and its population is mainly Kurds. The city's mayor comes from the Peoples' Democratic Party, a left-wing party that rallies mostly Kurds and defends both traditional Kurdish demands and the rights of Turkish women and other minorities.

Climate

The climate is continental, i.e. dry and warm while in winter cold with snowfall. Often the peak is covered in fog from the venting of hot gases of the volcano, while the valley on the outskirts has sunshine 300 days a year. At night the temperature at the top, even in summer drops well below zero, sometimes reaching -20ο C. At low altitudes, however, temperatures range from 17 – 34ο C.

July, August and September have the lowest rainfall heights, and especially in August the average rainfall is 2mm

Nature - Wildlife

On the slopes and around the mountain live wolves, white bear, deer, roe deer, red fox, weasels, wild cats, chamois, etc. It has a few forests of Beech, Oak, Fir and Pine, as well as a unique variety of odorless flowers

Switch plans

The escort of our office or the local driver has the option to modify the program if weather or other local conditions (strikes, civil unrest, etc.) require it, with the main criterion of the smooth development of the program and the safety of the participants. Any costs arising from such changes shall be covered by the participants.

Tip

Tipping is an optional gesture that is usually omitted even by happy travelers. However, the local staff of the climb relies heavily on a decent tip, as it is not a permanent job for them. So we suggest estimating an amount of around 20 € per person, which will be shared among all staff.

Insurance / insurance

Before travelling, please contact the Travel Medicine Office of EODY for instructions about our destination.

The cost of the trip includes Basic travel insurance, which covers various contingencies such as health contingencies (eg injury on a course at an altitude of up to 3,000 m, which requires transportation and hospitalization), missed flight and other cases, even coverage of total cancellation of the trip for an amount up to 5,000 € including cancellation due to covid-19

The coverage included is for ages up to 70 years old, while for ages 70 to 80 an additional amount is required, ask us for information.

In the following link you can see the benefits of the program and contact our insurance consultant to answer your questions about Travel Insurance coverage by Trekking Hellas

However, the included travel insurance does not cover evacuation at an altitude above 3,000 meters. And given that the trip takes place in an area with minimal infrastructure, an additional coverage of evacuation and rescue insurance is proposed.

Trekking Hellas cooperates with Global Rescue which covers incidents at altitudes up to 7,500 m with evacuation services. Follow the link below to buy Global Rescue & Trekking Hellas rescue insurance
